Welcoming Newcomer and Migrant Students
Since August 2022, the city of Chicago has received over 650 migrants. Chicago Public Schools is welcoming these migrants and remains committed to providing adequate resources to support the whole child. To equip newly-arriving students for success in our classrooms, CFF’s Compassion Fund is collecting donations to provide coats, clothing, and other cold weather gear to support our newcomers (ages 3-18) in this transition, along with other students in temporary living situations.
CPS Central Office staff are donating new, unused items at each of the District’s central office locations. CPS’ Office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE) is facilitating collecting and distribution of donated items. Monetary donations will support the purchase of additional new cold weather gear for newcomers, migrant enrollees, and other students in temporary living situations.
As Chicago weather shifts from fall to winter – and as additional arrivals are anticipated – these supports become more and more vital to these students’ success.
